"Between the crosses row on row"

In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army
In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
It's Rembrance Day and Veterans Day and so it's a good day to thank everyone and anyone who is giving or has given his or her life for our countries and our freedoms. I'm not sure if everyone is familar with this poem - I think it's one of the only truly Canadian things that American school children read in our classrooms (which is unfortunate). I've always loved this poem and I think it is still pretty meaningful. The flower is a poppy - Canadians and people in the UK wear them today (and for the past week or so) to commemorate the soldiers. RKZ swears that they give out poppies in the US also, but I don't think I've ever seen them.

The American Legion used to give them out for donations to the VA programs. The legion is dying out as the WWII's were the backbone of the organization. They are still here but just not a active as whe I was a kid...

this year, 10 people, (i think, including me,) recited the Gettysburg Address. It went pretty well actually and i now have a point that goes onto my percentage grade at the end of this quarter (i had 4 put on last month in Lit. because i did so well reciting the Address in class. great huh?) ya well the third graders recited "In Flander's Field" and they did pretty well too. (i had to do it when i was in 3rd grade) just thought i wuld tell you since you posted it on ur blog........
